Your beliefs

One of the four documents written at the Build.

The question it answers: why do you do it that way, when almost everyone in your trade does it differently?

This is the hardest of the four to write and the one that does the most work. It’s also the one you’ll be most surprised to see on paper, because you’ve never had to explain it to anyone — you just do it.

What’s actually in it

  • The judgment calls that make the work yours. The corner you refuse to cut. The step you always do that nobody charges for. The material you won’t use even when the customer asks.
  • What you’re arguing against. Every business with a real point of view is quietly in an argument with how their industry usually operates. Writing down what you think is wrong with the standard way is where the actual positioning lives.
  • What you’d rather lose a job than do. The clearest belief anyone has, and the one nobody puts on their website.
  • How you decide when it isn’t obvious. The principles you fall back on when the situation is new — the ones a good employee would need three years to absorb by watching you.
  • Why you do this at all. Not a mission statement. The actual reason, including the unflattering parts.

Why it matters

This is the file that answers “why you and not the one down the road” — and it’s the only one of the four a competitor can’t copy off your website, because it was never on your website.

It’s also the answer to the question that keeps owners up at night: if I stepped away for a week, would this hold together? What wobbles isn’t the process. Processes are written down somewhere. What wobbles is the judgment — the hundred small decisions a day that only you know how to make. This file is that judgment, written down. → the-genius-with-amnesia

What breaks without it

Marketing that could belong to anyone in your trade. It’s the reason so many businesses end up claiming “quality workmanship, fair prices, on time” — those are the only things left to say once the actual convictions have been sanded off.

Practically, it also means every new hire, freelancer and agency starts from zero, and each one guesses differently. That’s the real cost, and it compounds quietly for years.

Why it takes two conversations

You can’t write this one from a form, and nobody can write it for you. It comes out of being asked “why?” four times in a row about something you’d never thought to question. That’s the whole reason the Build costs what it costs — the price is the extraction, not the documents.
