Why your marketing sounds like everyone else's

Read your homepage, then read three competitors’. Cover the logos. Can you tell them apart?

Most can’t. Everyone ends up at some version of quality workmanship, fair prices, on time, family-owned since 1998. All true. All completely forgettable. And none of it is why anyone actually picks you.

There’s a specific reason it happens, and it isn’t laziness.

The reason

The real version of your business — what you actually do, who you’re really for, the corner you refuse to cut, why you do it your way when most of your trade doesn’t — has never been written down anywhere. It lives in your head.

So every person who has ever written anything for you has been guessing at it. The web designer guessed. The agency guessed. The freelancer guessed. Your nephew who did the Facebook page guessed.

And when someone has to guess, they reach for what’s safe. Safe is what everyone else says. That’s how three businesses with genuinely different standards end up with the same four adjectives.

Why it’s got worse, not better

If you’ve tried AI for this, you’ve felt it sharper. You open a chat, spend twenty minutes explaining your business, get back something correct and anonymous, and rewrite it yourself. Tomorrow it’s forgotten all of it and you start over.

The tool isn’t the problem. It’s guessing for the same reason everyone else was — nobody ever wrote your business down. A smarter one with nothing to read is still guessing; it just guesses faster and more confidently.

What it actually costs

  • You can’t hand marketing to anyone, because you’re still the editor on every draft. The work stays on your desk.
  • Every new agency, hire or freelancer starts from zero and guesses differently — so your marketing gets less consistent the more people touch it.
  • And the thing that would actually win you the job — the reason you’re different — is the one thing that never makes it onto the page, because it’s the hardest part to guess.

The fix

Write it down once, properly, and have everything read from it afterwards. → what-changes
